In today's hectic world filled with distractions and responsibilities, it is easy to neglect our physical health. Many Christians may not realize that taking care of our bodies is integral to living out our faith. It goes beyond simply wishing to look good; it is about how we fulfill our divine purpose and express our faith through our actions.

This post will explore why physical health is so crucial for Christians. We'll examine biblical teachings, practical implications, and how nurturing our bodies reflects our commitment to God’s purpose.

Understanding the Body as a Temple

The Bible teaches us in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. It states, “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit… You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” This verse highlights that what we do with our physical bodies is not just a personal matter; it is important as we strive to show honor to God.

When we prioritize our health, we show respect for the life God has given us. For instance, studies reveal that people who maintain a balanced diet and exercise regularly not only feel better but also live longer. According to the CDC, adults who engage in regular physical activity can lower their risk of chronic diseases by up to 50%.

The Interconnection of Body and Spirit

The bond between our physical health and spiritual well-being is significant. Physical illness can lead to fatigue, discouragement, and a disconnect from our spiritual lives. For example, a person battling chronic pain may find it challenging to engage in prayer, community activities, or even service to other brothers and sisters.

On the flip side, when we embrace healthy habits—such as exercising regularly, eating well, and ensuring proper rest—our overall sense of well-being improves. Engaging in physical activity, like a brisk 30-minute walk, can boost endorphin levels, helping us to feel more energized and connected to God.

Living Out Our Purpose

As Christians, we are called to share Christ's love through service. This requires us to be active in our communities, whether through volunteer work or lending a listening ear to friends. However, if we are physically unwell, our ability to serve effectively diminishes.

For example, a healthy person has the energy needed to volunteer at a local food bank, organize community events, or mentor youth. On the other hand, neglecting our health can lead to burnout or inability to participate.

The Role of Community

Fellowship and everyone fulfilling their responsibility in our Spiritual body is vital in Christianity, as noted in Romans 12:4-5. When we improve our physical health, we positively influence those around us. Healthy friends can inspire others to adopt healthier lifestyles.

For most people it is extremely difficult to go on this journey of having a healthy lifestyle, but it becomes more more possible if you have someone to go on it with. Luckily for us we have a family to "do life with", and there is never a shortage of people who you can look to. If you need a workout partner, a new database of healthy recipes to try out, or someone to distract you while you go on your 30 minute walk then turn to your church community first. We only grow closer to one another if we work alongside each other.

"So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone,

and especially to those who are of the household of faith."

Galatians 6:10

Mental Health and Spiritual Growth

There is a strong link between physical health and mental well-being, which in turn affects our spiritual growth. Research has shown that regular exercise can reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression by a large amount. When we feel good physically, we are more emotionally balanced and may find it easier to believe what God says about His creation. You are less irritable with yourself, significant other, your children, your parents, or anyone in the community.

When you are stressed then your cortisol levels are high and your production of oxytocin is low. This makes it more difficult to accept or see the loving gestures of people all around you, and it also strongly deters you from showing love to those around you.

Stewardship of God’s Gifts

Stewardship relates not only to the environment or finances; it also includes caring for our bodies. God has entrusted us with the responsibility to maintain our health. By making health a priority, we show gratitude for the life we have and respect the gifts He has given us.

When we take care of our physical health, we can better utilize our talents and abilities. For instance, someone who participates in regular exercise is likely to feel healthier and more capable of pursuing their career and spiritual calling.

Practical Steps Towards Better Health

Recognizing the importance of physical health is just the beginning. Here are some practical suggestions to strengthen the link between your faith and your physical well-being:

  • Establish a Routine: Dedicate specific times each week for physical activities such as jogging, biking, or attending a fitness class. Make consistency a priority.

  • Eat Well: Aim for balanced meals rich in color. Incorporate fruits, vegetables, proteins, and healthy fats. Studies suggest that diets rich in fiber can lead to a lower risk of heart disease.

  • Incorporate Rest: Allow adequate time for rest and self-care. Prioritize quality sleep by aiming for 7 to 9 hours each night, which will support both physical and spiritual rejuvenation.

  • Engage in Prayer and Reflection: Use exercise time for prayer or meditation, enhancing your spiritual connection during your workouts.

Embracing a Holistic Approach

Ultimately, recognizing the connection between physical health and our faith allows us to live purposefully. I strongly believe that a healthy body not only honors God but enhances our ability to serve others, strengthens our community ties, and enriches our spiritual lives.

As you work toward better health, remember that every small step—whether it’s choosing a nutritious meal or committing to a daily walk—is progress. Progress toward honoring God and expressing your faith. Fill your life with actions that reflect both your love for God and the gifts He has given you.

I just touched on some points here that I thought would be helpful in introducing this idea, but through our new Faith and Fitness podcast (released everywhere on January 31st) we're able to dig a little deeper into this topic. Why do we, as Christians, shy away from taking care of ourselves? What do I do when I don't have any motivation? Is there science that explains more of what's happening in your body and mind?
